Instructional Software Tools in Technology Integration Strategies

Technology software tools can be placed into five categories. First, is drill-and-practice. The Second is tutorial software. The third is simulation software. Next, is instructional game software. Finally, problem solving software is last. Only three of these five categories fits the needs of a constructivist learner/ teacher. The three that fit are simulation, instructional game, and problem solving softwares. A simulation is a computerized model of a real or imaginary system that is designed to teach how the stystem works. Learners must choose tasks and in which order to do those tasks. A good example of simulation software is "The Oregon Trail". A game in which you take a simulated trip in the old west during the 1890's. Students take on the role of pioneers traveling in a wagon train. The next type of software, instructional games, are designed to increase motivation by adding game rules and/or competition to learning activities. One example of a good instructional game is "Arthur's math games". This is a game in which students practice their math skills. They do adventures that require essential math skills in counting, logic, and geometry. The final type of software is problem solving. This software functions may focus on fostering component skills in or approaches to general problem-solving ability, or it may provide opportunities to practice solving various kinds of content area problems. A good example of a problem solving software is "The Geometer's sketchpad". This software is a dynamic construction and exploration tool in which students use software features to draw objects, investigate their mathematical properties, analyze problems, propose solutions, and do proofs to test their hypothesis.
